Green building can save money

Body

For environmental enthusiasts tax rebates aren’t the reason they got into green building, but it could be one reason the industry is growing.

Cape Fear Green Building Alliance spokesperson Elaine Jack said the organization has more than 100 members, about double the membership it had just six months ago.

“There’s a lot of room for everyone to get a little piece of the pie of the stimulus package. There’s tax credits that are available, there’re also grants, there’s a certain income level for people to weatherize, things like that,” Jack said.

Bill Christopher and Matt Hosmer own ILM Design Build and are members of the CFGBA.

The two men focus on environmentally friendly home remodeling. Even though green building is a relatively new term, they say they’ve been doing it for years.

“If you look back that far the things that were green then are standard practice today, and that trend is probably going to keep on going,” Christopher said.

Green builders say it’s not just about solar power and new technology. ILM uses recycled materials like wood and bricks, not to mention environmentally friendly insulation.

For home builders right now, green building is a go.

For home owners green building can mean more green in their wallets. New technology like a tankless water heater, which can keep water at a constant temperature, can save a few hundred dollars each year.
