Store owner turns to social media to help fight shoplifting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A downtown Wilmington business owner says thieves keep coming to her store and stealing, but she’s caught some of them on camera. Now she’s turning to social media for help.

Kelsey Gibbs owns The Wonder Shop on N. Front St. She says over the past several weeks she has had a few run-ins with some shoplifters.

Friday, Gibbs says a group of young black women came in to her store and stole a $49 dress. She caught the theft on a security camera.

Gibbs says this is not the first time. Just last year someone stole close to $500 worth of merchandise.

“They come in in groups,” Gibbs said of the thieves. “It’s kinda the same ruse every time. They come in about three girls and ask distracting questions, and if there is one person here, and then there is one person distracted, the other one is stuffing their bag with thin dresses.”

In the past several months, the store has installed a number of surveillance cameras to help limit the amount of shoplifting. Gibbs posted video of the most recent theft on Facebook to get the public’s help.

Gibbs says shoplifting is especially a problem during holiday weekends and when festivals are here in the Port City.
