DOT already busy getting roads ready for storm threat

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Southeastern North Carolina is bracing for what could be a winter weather mess. Meanwhile the Department of Transportation has been busy preparing to keep the roads safe.

Monday was a beautiful day with blue skies as far as the eye could see; a completely different story than what the forecast is calling for for the next couple of days.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Grace Butler said while enjoying some ice cream Monday. “The last time it snowed was a couple of years ago.”

As we brace ourselves for the storm, some are already preparing to stay indoors.

“I’m not going to be driving if it snows, especially if class get canceled,” CFCC student Parker Bishop said.

“It creates a lot of issues for people around here that don’t have four-wheel drive and aren’t accustom to driving in the snow,” driver Scott Dispirito said.

NCDOT crews started treating roads Sunday night and continued the work today. In New Hanover County, crews have already dumped more than 3,500 gallons of salt brine on streets. Workers will report to work at midnight Tuesday and are prepared for the long haul.

“We’re going to be here until the roads are in a safe, passable manner,” the DOT’s Gerard Taylor said.

The DOT in New Hanover County says there will be about 10 trucks on the road at any given time during the storm.

“They’ve got a lot of equipment they are operating all at the same time while they are driving,” Taylor said. “Give that driver some room. Give yourself some room.”

The DOT has already ordered an additional 250 tons of salt for New Hanover County to make sure they have enough to keep up with mother nature.
