Ice freezes some local deliveries, accelerates others

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With many of the roads in Southeastern North Carolina resembling ice rinks some companies have decided the risk of driving isn’t worth the reward, but that’s not stopping restaurants from delivering any way they can.

The motto at Jimmy John’s is ‘Freaky Fast’, but at the market street location in downtown Wilmington they have limited deliveries to a few blocks within walking distance of their restaurant.

Manager Jameson McAlister says one of his drivers lives is more valuable than selling a few more sandwiches.

“The roads downtown are really unsafe right now, and I’m pretty sure it’s like this everywhere else, so we’re only doing deliveries to the bar areas,” said Jameson McAlister. “It’s safety first for our drivers because we can’t even get out of the parking lot it’s frozen solid. It would be terribly unsafe because their cars don’t have any special equipment for the snow and we’re not prepared for snow because we’re not used to it at all. It would just be too dangerous for them.”

Domino’s is taking a different approach for its delivery drivers.

Not only is Domino’s delivering pizzas, but they’re also brining prescription pills to people who can’t get out of the house to get them.

NCDOT officials hope to have the roads cleared by Friday afternoon, but they say for Thursday night it’s just best to stay at home due to the threat of black ice forming on the roads.
