MELTING AWAY: Roads improve as thaw begins

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Life is finally starting to return to normal around the region as a long-awaited thaw has finally begun.

Despite light precipitation overnight, temperatures at or above freezing aided the work of road crews as southeastern North Carolina begins to defrost from a winter storm that will be long remembered for its ice than snow in many areas.

Early this morning main roads in Wilmington like MLK Parkway, Market St. and College Rd. were mainly clear of ice, though patches of slushed remained. Many secondary roads, though remained messier, but conditions are improving.

Today’s forecast calls for highs in the 40s. It’s a significant departure from the sub-freezing temperatures that have gripped the region since Tuesday evening. The warmth should allow significant melting letting some people venture out for the first time in days.

Emergency dispatchers told WWAY there were no significant issues around the region overnight. It may be a sign that many drivers continued to need warnings to stay off roads unless travel was absolutely necessary.

Still trouble spots will continue in many areas, and drivers are urged to continue using caution, slow down and increase their following distance.
