Wilmington’s own Spokesmen fighting for national championship

Wheelchair basketball is just what the name implies, but for the players on the Port City Spokesmen it is not just a friendly game of hoops, it is a rough, intense, and physical competition.

The basketball goal is regulation – ten feet tall, and most of the rules are regulation as well. One exception is traveling. These guys have to shoot, bounce or pass the ball after they have touched their wheels twice, otherwise it is a violation.

“The wheelchair in wheelchair basketball is part of the body and the rules of our game are based on that,” said Tim Corbett of the Port City Spokesmen.

The Port City Spokesmen finished up their final practice of the season Tuesday. They have qualified for the Division 3 National Wheelchair Tournament in Colorado, and their goal is quite simple, win the Wheelchair National Championship; a feat some of the players accomplished back in 2003 & 2004.

Freddie Smith said, “We’re going there to come back home with a win. I was always told nobody knows who number two is, so you’re first or last and we want to be first.”

Tim Corbett added, “We’ve all been injured and it’s been a really good thing for me – a brotherhood. It’s something positive and it brings me a great deal of motivation.”

Good luck guys! Bring that championship home!

If you want to help the Port City Spokesman, you can send checks to the Wilmington Disabled Athletic Association at 108 Belvedere Court, Leland, NC 28401.
