Cape Fear Memorial Bridge among worst in state

Body

According to a survey done by AAA, more than 46,000 cars travel over the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge each day — that’s more than 300,000 cars a week. Still, the drivers we spoke with say they weren’t surprised to find the bridge among the ten worst in the state of North Carolina.

“From time to time it is pretty bad; traffic is bad, they need another bridge,” said Clifford Richards who travels over the bridge frequently.

AAA ranked the North Carolina bridges based on government sufficiency ratings and vehicle traffic. The survey is an effort to show the need for legislative funding.

But DOT Division Engineer Allen Pope said drivers shouldn’t be concerned about the poor ranking. “It has shown some age, we’ve done some things to give it some face lifts, but the bridge is still safe to travel across or we wouldn’t allow folks to travel it.”

The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge was built in 1969 and has definitely had some wear and tear. This year, the bridge fell five spots from last years ranking.

The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge’s two upgrades in 2008 were not factored into the survey, which means the bridge could already be on the road to recovery.

Nearly thirty percent of North Carolina bridges received a sub-standard rating, but none pose an immediate threat to drivers.

Governor Bev Perdue recently said seventy highway and bridge projects will be funded by money from the economic stimulus, however the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is not one of them.
