NC Maritime Museum trying to stay afloat

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport could be on the chopping block because of state budget cuts.
Museum supporters pleaded their case at last night’s Board of Aldermen meeting. They want to house the museum in the city’s parks and recreation building, and are asking the city to lease it to the state for one dollar a year, for ten years.
The board didn’t vote one way or another, but passed a resolution of intent to authorize the lease.
Supporters say that vote is better than nothing. “It’s not an adversarial thing, it’s just that there’s a lot of requests and representing the museum, the state museum here, we are appealing to have this building. If we don’t get it, the museum goes away. It’s been here for almost 20 years now,” said Walt Madsen who is a member of the Friends of NC Maritime Museum at Southport.
The board plans to do some more research on the issue. Looking into other ways of keeping state funding for the museum, and possibly looking for other locations, so the Parks and Rec Department won’t have to move. They’ll vote on the issue at their next meeting.
