Owner hopes for permit to open restaurant in neighborhood where others have failed
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new restaurant may be popping up in the 500 block of Red Cross St. in Wilmington.
Al Snyder hopes to make his dream a reality and open Detour Deli in an old, empty building at 510 1/2 Red Cross St. Snyder says he bought the building in November, but a special use permit slowed his progress.
Other restaurants in the neighborhood have failed, and Snyder says new businesses are hesitant to come this way because they’re only looking at numbers.
“They’re calculating what’s the population density, how affluent the area is and all that,” he said. “We just haven’t gotten to that point where on paper it’s going to attract other people from outside the neighborhood.”
Snyder says the area is growing, and his business is just ahead of the curve.
Wilmington City Council will consider his permit tonight.
