Beekeepers Association spreads buzz with Bee Buddies program for kids

WILMINGTON, NC (WWYA) — The North Carolina State Beekeepers Association plans a sweet deal for local elementary students.

About 450 kids will take part of the first “Bee Buddies” program. The program will educate students on every aspect of the insect and their importance in nature.

“We want them to be beekeepers, and if they don’t develop into a beekeeper, maybe they’ll develop into a research person,” Beekeepers Association member David Bridgers said.

Fifth grader Caroline Sawyer got to see what the buzz about. She held a frame of bees unprotected with the help of local association members

Sawyer said the best part was watching a drone bee hatch.

“I felt nervous and super excited at the same time,” Sawyer said. “I was like, ‘Cool. I’m doing this!’ And, ‘Oh, my gosh. There’s bees!'”

The program will run in conjunction with the NC State Beekeepers Association Convention. It’s March 5 and 6 at the Wilmington Convention Center.
