Teen charged with Marine’s death
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say an Apex teen is to blame for the death of a Marine after a car wreck Sunday.
WPD arrested Jackson Davies for felony death by motor vehicle Wednesday night after he was discharged from New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The 19-year-old posted his $50,000 bond and will make his first appearance in front of a judge Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses say a fight at a Sigma Nu fraternity party at home on Rose Ave. prompted Cory Lee Reese, 22, a Camp Lejeune Marine, to jump on the hood of the car Davies was driving early Sunday morning. Police say Davies was heading south toward Wrightsville Ave., when witnesses say he lost control. Investigators say around 1 a.m. Davies hit a tree and utility pole in the 200 block of Rose Avenue.
Davies is also charged with DWI. He will be in court in April to answer to that charge.
Sigma Nu Fraternity Executive Director Brad Beacham said the national office has suspended all of the UNCW chapter’s activity pending the outcome of its investigation. He could not give a timeline on when the investigation would be complete, but he said it has already started and that their thoughts and prayers are with Reese’s family.
