Brunswick Co. voters to decide sales tax hike in May
BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Commission will let voters decide whether to raise the county’s sales tax.
Commissioners voted 4-1 this afternoon to put a referendum for a quarter-cent increase on the May ballot. Only Republican Frank Williams voted against the move.
The county estimates the increase would generate $3 million a year. The money would go toward beach nourishment and school improvements.
Such an increase would bring the total sales tax rate to seven percent in Brunswick County. New Hanover County voters approved the same increase in May 2010.
