Marines make historical march

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — More than 150 Marines making up the 2d Maintenance Battalion General Maintenance Company from left Camp Lejeune by bus for Carolina Beach. Together they marched in line 9 miles in an effort to learn about the Civil War and the role the Marines played.

“History is extremely important in the Marine Corps. We’ve fought in every battle, every war that the United States has been in. The Civil War is one of those wars,” explained 1stLt Joseph Strumolo.

The Marines in his company said they’re eager to soak up a history lesson. 19-year-old Lance Corporal Gary Waszcyszak said, “Without history we’d just be repeating ourselves constantly.”

One step at a time the Marines made their way toward Fort Fisher, stopping at historical spots. Carolina Beach Police escorted the battalion and stopped traffic as needed. Though the hike was education, it was far from leisure. Each Marine carried a pack full of equipment on his or her back, weighing about 40 pounds. In addition to that, the Marines also sported their flack jackets – each weighing about 30 pounds, totally 70 pounds of gear.

It was a 9-mile hike at a pace of 3 miles per hour. And it was humbling. Corporal Hasani Feraro said he loved “being part of something bigger than myself.” He paused then continued describing his favorite part about being a Marine. “I love keeping the honor clean and living day by day knowing that I’m supporting and defending my country.”

1stLt Strumolo said, “It’s important for Marines to understand where they came from in order for us to know where we’re going in the future.”

2d Maintenance Battalion may even have some standouts, whom may be the subjects of history lessons in centuries to come.
