2nd annual Wilmington Race for the Cure hits the streets

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The streets of downtown Wilmington ran pink this weekend as hundreds came out to participate in Wilmington's second annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The 5K raises money for breast cancer awareness and research.

Runners raced through downtown starting at 2nd and Market streets.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, but death rates have been declining with the help of screenings, early detection and increased awareness through events like this.

Kimberly Stafford participated in the race for the first time this year.

"This is a never-ending battle for women and men," Stafford said. "I think it's just such a great experience to come together and realize we can be a part of something that's so much bigger than each one of us."

They will continue fundraising through the end of March.

Visit Komen's website for more information.
