Body

New Hanover County government has lost more than 100 employees recently. Between layoffs, hiring freezes, and early retirements in the midst of a budget crunch, the county is having to reorganize the employees they have left.

The county froze 45 vacant positions, had 42 early retirements, and has now laid off 27 employees. That means the county will have 114 vacant positions.

The Emergency Management and the Public Communications Safety departments will be consolidated as of June first. On June 30th, the Human Relations Department will be eliminated.

Also beginning July first, New Hanover County public libraries will be open fewer hours.

All remaining county employees will be required to take ten furlough days. With the reorganization the county will be able to balance the budget without a property tax increase.
