WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Where will everyone park? After all, thousands will be doing it at Eagle Point the first week of May in 2017. “I don’t think we’re going to have a traffic problem, like you may think, during the tournament,” Eagle Point Golf Club President Bobby Long said. “I believe you’re going to have a traffic problem after the tournament because of all the people that want to come to Wilmington.” Bobby Long will be the first to admit the logistic challenge of the Wells Fargo Championship coming to the Port City is a work in progress, but there’s already a plan in place. “we have satellite parking locations picked out, but nothing has been secured yet. We’re trying to make sure that we have enough to choose from that if we don’t get some of them it’ll be ok. We tried to work on the routing and bussing and that kind of stuff, without being disruptive to local residents too.”
Even though it’s only for one year, the PGA Tour coming to Eagle Point will have a huge economic impact on New Hanover County and the surrounding area. In the millions, no doubt. Most of the top players on tour, are expected to play. Kym Hougham is the executive director of the tournament. “We’ve seen it before where tournaments have moved from one a host course to a location that hasn’t had a tournament in awhile, and they just blow the doors open.”
New Hanover County sheriff Ed McMahon has yet to meet with the club about security, but that will certainly change down the road. “We have plenty of time to prepare for it.” McMahon said. “I’m looking forward to it. I think we can pull it off without a hitch.”
Most of the grass at at the Eagle Point Golf Club is currently doormant. In some spots there’s more brown than green, but in 2017 bright green is likely all you’ll see according to Long. “We will probably not overseed the fairways, but we’ll overseed the rough and it’ll be absolutely sensational on tv.”
Eagle Point is a private club. The club’s doors are not open to the public often, but they’ll be in open for a week in early May of 2017.
