FIRST ON 3: Investigators all but certain of identity of body found on BHI
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The preliminary results of an autopsy yesterday has investigators almost sure they know the identity of a body that washed up on Bald Head Island Monday.
Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove, whose department is handling the investigation, says a medical examiner confirmed during an autopsy yesterday in Greenville that the body was a black male. Dove said while the identity has not been confirmed, comparison of dental records leads investigators to believe the body is Adam Muhammad. The 22-year-old went missing in Southport in mid February. Chief Dove says he has notified Muhammad’s family of the developments in the investigation and identification.
Dove says Muhammad had not been to the dentist since 2005, so the medical examiner wants to talk to the dentist who treated him about a wisdom tooth that may have come in since. The ME also took DNA and blood samples for comparison, Dove said.
While investigators believe they are close to a positive identification, it’s still unclear how the man died. Dove says there are no signs of trauma like gunshot or knife wounds. At this point the cause of death is listed as undetermined and pending, Dove said.
