Lake Waccamaw is the source of inspiration for one Whiteville artist

Here on serene Lake Waccamaw, artist Christine Balogh finds her inspiration. “What I really like the most here are the animals,” she said. “The turtles in the canal, they are so funny when they are coming out and they are sunning themselves.”

A Hungarian born artist, Balogh studied in Budapest and Vienna before immigrating to the United States in the late sixties. She is an artist in many different mediums; frescos, mosaics, painting, pottery making and tapestry. You can find her weaving on a six foot loom inside her home and art studio that overlook the lake.

“Whatever I am doing at the time, it is my favorite,” said Christine.

In the span of her forty plus year career, she has had more than 25 exhibitions both in North Carolina and abroad. Balogh has taught art at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville since 1968. She shares her expertise and instills creativity on all that are willing to learn.

Christine said, “I always told my students, if you never tried to read, would you be able to read?”

Earning degrees from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Budapest fined tuned her skills, but her artistic eye began much earlier. Balogh’s mother was her very first inspiration and teacher. “My mother was a painter,” she remembers. “Every summer when we lived in Hungary, we went to a big lake and she was painting there always. I helped her carry a canvas and watch the brushes and I sat down and made little sketches.”

“I can thank my mother that I can do what I am doing,” said Christine.
