Owner says fire that destroyed business was arson
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Portions of Market Street remain closed as firefighters work on a fire that’s been burning since about 2:15 p.m.
As crews from Wilmington, New Hanover and Pender counties defensively fight the fire, the business owner and her neighbors all say arson was involved.
Dorothy Noe says that she was in business for 35 years, but it took a fire only a matter of hours to destroy her business. Now an arson investigation unit and Wilmington Police say her store at 6721 Market Street is a crime scene.
Witnesses say around 2:15 p.m. they noticed flames coming out of the building occupied by Dorothy’s Ruffled Originals, which sells curtains and other fabrics. As they called 911 and called out to see if anyone needed help they say a man came rushing out of the building followed by two women.
No one was injured, and everyone inside of the building made it out unharmed.
Noe says the fire is suspicious.
“It seems kind of strange that we have a little closet there, and you walk outside and there is a fire in that area, but it is an old building and there are some old wires that aren’t up to par and things like that,” Noe said.
Neighbors say that this is the second fire at the business in the past month and that Noe was supposed to vacate the building, which is owned by Coastal Realty, by the end of April.
