RALEIGH — North Carolina officials have permanently suspended the license of a well-known pediatrician who was accused of conducting improper genital exams of five patients.

The state medical board released a consent agreement Friday with Dr. Melvin D. Levine. He ran a clinic at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a research institute for children with learning and behavioral disabilities.

The agreement said five pediatric patients were examined by Levine without a chaperone, guardian or parent present between 1987 and 2006. The board said the exams weren’t medically necessary.

Levine said in the agreement the exams were necessary for identifying abnormalities that might cause developmental problems, but agreed not to appeal the suspension or practice medicine in another state.
