Police investigating early-morning shooting after man takes shot to chest
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are investigating after they say a Wilmington man was shot in the chest early this morning after getting several reports of shots fired.
Just after 3 a.m., a call came in reporting the sound of a single gunshot and scream in the area of Market Street near Darlington Ave. Another call came in soon after, reporting someone was shot at 140 Spring Ave. That’s where police say officers discovered the man with a gunshot wound.
Police say the wounded man, Christopher Waller, 28, told them he was jumped, robbed and shot when he was walking. Officers stopped a Mustang leaving the area about the same time, when police say they found an AR-15 in the front seat.
The woman driving the Mustang told officers she drove Waller to the area to meet someone he was on the phone with just before hearing a gunshot ring out, but never saw him again, according to a WPD spokeswoman.
Police say once Waller was at the hospital, he told them a magazine for the gun they found in the front seat of the Mustang was stolen. They say Waller would not give police any details about the guy who he met when he was shot, but did say he goes by “P.”
Police say officers found a shell casing in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Metting Road. They say Waller is still recovering from the gunshot wound as WPD continues to investigate the crime.
