UPDATE: Suspect identified in Sunday’s officer-involved shooting

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Investigators have identified the man who led authorities on a high speed car chase.

According to District Attorney Jon David, the suspect has been identified as Gregory Reynolds Evans, 60, of Jacksonville.

The chase ended with multiple shots being fired at the Evans Sunday afternoon near East Columbus High School.

Evans was shot by multiple law enforcement officers from the State Highway Patrol and the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

Evans was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, but his condition is unknown at this time.

According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 2:20 p.m. on US 74/76 between Chauncey Road and Old Lake Road.

Prior to the shooting, law enforcement officials attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Evans’ vehicle on US 701 just south of Whiteville.

Evans refused to stop and a pursuit began. The vehicle eventually traveled onto US 74/76 towards Wilmington before coming to a final rest in the median.

Evans exited his vehicle and displayed a weapon. As a result, officers began firing on him.

Evans faces several charges in Jacksonville, including attempted murder.

The State Bureau of Investigation is the lead investigating agency into this shooting incident.

Portions of US 74/76 were closed for much of the afternoon but later reopened.
