Need for fiber optics means Corning will re-hire some employees

A spike in demand for fiber optics in China is good news for the Corning plant in Wilmington.

Back in December, Corning announced their first round of layoffs, which were mostly hourly paid staff. Last month, Corning had layoffs again for salaried workers.

Corning would never say how many people had been affected. The reduction in staff came after a drop in sales, but recently sales in fiber optics have rebounded.

The reason? China’s increased need for fiber optics to build their mobile networks. So some of the production workers are back on the job.

Employment Security Commission Manager Walker Biggs said it’s a good sign when anyone is returning to work in this economy. “Not just Corning, but other companies when they have layoffs, a lot of times they really don’t want to do it but the economy or whatever the situation is at the time they do it. As soon as they can bring people back they start calling them back and say look I want you to come back to work and we’ve got work available for you. It gives us hope that maybe here locally maybe things are getting better and we can only hope for the best.”

The Wilmington plant is the world’s largest fiber optical plant.

Before the layoffs, Corning employed about 950 people in the Wilmington area. A company spokesperson would not tell us how many people would be returning to work.
