Plant an Azalea Week

Video

Body

Cape Fear Garden Club and the Mayor’s of Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach have proclaimed the week of March 22 through March 28, 2009 as “Plant an Azalea Week”. The effort encourages the residents of New Hanover County to plant azaleas at their residences and businesses and in public areas. “The last week of March is set aside to return our community to what the famed photographer/conservationist and Wilmington native Hugh Morton described as ‘the city of over a million azaleas’ ” according Cape Fear Garden
Club President Teresa Hill. “As home to the North Carolina Azalea Festival, the community must make a dedicated effort to maintain our area as the ‘Community of a Million Azaleas’ and the garden spot of the state.”

Beginning in the late 1940’s, planting azaleas in Wilmington was promoted resulting in the beautiful display of color still enjoyed today. Through the years, the collaborative efforts of Cape Fear Garden Club with the City of Wilmington and area non-profit agencies have
focused on the beautification of our public areas. Unfortunately, there has been a marked decline in the planting of old southern favorites, especially the azalea, by are homeowners and businesses. To encourage residents to plant azaleas several garden centers and nurseries have discounted their stock of azaleas during *“Plant an Azalea Week”*. Those participating include: Five Oaks Nursery, Lou’s Flower Patch, Lloyds’ of Landscape, The Transplanted Garden and Zone 8.

Please join Cape Fear Garden Club and our local governments in the effort to reestablish the beautiful azaleas that have come to symbolize our area. For information on planting azaleas visit http://www.capefeargardenclub.org . Help
return New Hanover County to the “Community of a Million Azaleas” during “Plant an Azalea Week” March 22 through March 28.
