Cartrette Technology Center to provide expert training

Body

Columbus County has the highest unemployment rate in our five county area at nearly 14 percent.

In hopes of offering focused training for its students to help them land a job, Southeastern Community College has a new building on campus, dedicated to technology studies.

Students are already settled into their new space. The new Cartrette Technology Center has state of the art equipment and facilities, and could help these students land a job in these tough economic times.

That’s what Theresa Lengner is hoping. She was recently laid off from her manufacturing job. Lengner is part of the bio-agricultural program. She can take her degree and ultimately work on developing renewable energy. “If you want to re-tool yourself, and get some of these new biotech jobs, or even just a lab environment.”

“We are combining the opportunity to combine our rural environment with the traditional economy of farming and agriculture, and work with agri-business and create jobs,” said Congressman Mike McIntyre.

The building was donated and named after the Cartrettes, an avid farming family in Columbus County.

Myles Cartrette and his mother, Myrtle, were at the building’s dedication ceremony Monday in honor of their late husband and dad, James Allen Cartrette.

“My mother and dad truly believed in Columbus County, they stayed here, raised a family here, worked here, built a business here, and we felt like it was the right thing for Columbus County in these times,” said Myles Cartrette.

Faculty and students hope this training will bring some economic luck to Columbus County. In addition to the building, the Cartrette family has donated hundreds of acres of their farming land to the college over the years.
