Troopers: Boy on motorized scooter run over after not stopping for school bus
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A child riding a motorized scooter has been injured after investigators say he failed to stop for a school bus and was run over by one of its tires this afternoon in New Hanover County.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer says the accident happened on Bonfire Way. That’s near Monkey Junction.
Highway Patrol says the eight-year-old boy was riding his scooter down the driveway in front of his house. Investigators say the boy saw the bus coming, but he did not stop. They say the bus driver was getting ready to let a student off the bus, so she was driving slower than the posted speed limit. The driver told investigators she saw the boy, but she figured he would stop. Instead, he hit the side of the bus and was run over by the right rear tire.
The boy was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with what troopers described as a serious leg injury. The boy was wearing a helmet, which investigators say saved him from suffering a head injury as well.
Investigators say neighbors told them the boy was almost run over last week because of a similar situation.
There were three other students on the bus when the incident happened. Another bus came to the scene to take them home.
Highway Patrol says the driver will not be charged.
