NC highway marker to honor furniture industry
HIGH POINT, NC (AP) — A state Highway Historical Marker is being dedicated in High Point to recognize the importance of the furniture industry to North Carolina.
The marker will be dedicated on Main Street on Monday, the final day of the spring High Point Market. The market is billed as the largest home furnishings trade show in the world.
High Point emerged as a furniture manufacturing center in 1900, and its 10-story exposition building opened in June 1921 with 249,000 square feet of space. The market now has more than 10 million square feet of space.
At its peak, the state’s industry included more than 660 manufacturers and produced in excess of $6 billion in furniture and furnishings in North Carolina.
