Part of Wilmington Bypass set to open in a few months

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Good news for those who live in Brunswick County, a portion of the bypass that connects US 74-76 to US-17 will be done in just a few months.

“We’re trying to wait and get the traffic signals and the crossovers installed under there. That’s the biggest reason we can’t open it yet,” Resident engineer for the NC DOT Wayne Currie said.

Currie says bad weather is to blame for the delay.

“It’s not been great weather for construction period. It wasn’t a great winter or spring,” He explained.

But bridges connecting this road to I-140 in New Hanover County are not ready yet, and won’t be for another three years. So, those who use this road can’t go very far.

“There isn’t going to be, I don’t think, a whole lot of traffic on it. But it’s a start to the end to alleviate some of the traffic problems going through Wilmington,” Lawrence Burgwald said.

“It seems to me it’s more or less a road to nowhere,” Edana Schmidt said. “I don’t see what good it’s going to do any of us.”

The entire bypass will not be done until at least 2017 or later.

“I hope I’m still here,” Schmidt said. “It seems like a long time. We’ve been waiting for it for a long time.”

And patience among those wanting to use the road is running out.

“Get the road done,” Burgwald said.

Engineers say they started this portion of the bypass first because they had they funding and plans already in place.
