Mother, daughter escape fire investigators say was intentionally set

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Fire investigators in Pender County say a man is in custody accused of setting a fire last night at a home with two people inside.

Fire Marshal Charles Newman says it happened at a two story home just before 7 p.m. on Highsmith Road near Burgaw. Newman says a mother and daughter were inside the home when the fire started. He says they got out safely.

Newman says the Pender County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man for setting the fire, but he did not know the suspect’s name. The Sheriff’s Office has not returned a call for information.

Newman says his office is investigating the fire along with the SBI and the Pender County Sheriff’s Office. He would not release details of how the fire was set.
