ACLU wants judge to put NC voter ID law on hold

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — Advocacy groups are asking a federal judge to put key provisions of North Carolina’s elections overhaul law on hold for the November election.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups have already filed a lawsuit to block provisions of the 2013 law approved by the General Assembly, saying they will erode voting rights, particularly among minorities.

But with the trial not expected until 2015, the ACLU asked a judge late Monday to put North Carolina’s law on hold.

ACLU spokesman Dale Ho says they’re worried some people could be blocked from voting.

The challenged provisions of the law include a photo identification requirement to vote in person, the reduction of the number of early voting days and the elimination of same-day voter registration during the early voting period.
