Wrightsville Beach dredging project likely to last into mid-June

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Work to replenish sand at Wrightsville Beach will last longer than expected.

Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Tim Owens says the contractor handling the dredging project and the Army Corps of Engineers have asked for an extension to finish the work. Owens says that means parts of the beach will be blocked off until June 13.

Owens says the project is about five days behind schedule for a variety of reasons, including mechanical issues and the amount of sand available. He says the work should be past Johnny Mercer’s Pier by Memorial Day, which will clear one of the busiest stretches of the beach strand.

Crews work in 1,000-foot increments, Owens said, meaning they block off that amount of beach as they work.

“It’s not ideal, but we need the project before Hurricane Season,” Owens said.
