VFW Commander speaks out on VA issues

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV)– As the investigation into just happened at V.A. hospitals across the country continues veterans in the cape fear across are speaking out.

At the Wilmington V.F.W. the Commander-In-Chief of the organization made a stop for dinner and the violations at V.A. hospitals were on his mind as well.

“If any of those allegations turn out to be true it is certainly unacceptable,” said William Thien.

As a veteran himself it’s fair to say vets are Thien’s life.

“We certainly think it is important to get to the bottom of it,” he said. “We are asking for accountability, transparency, we wanna (sic) know the truth, we’re asking for the truth.”

News of trouble at the V.A. came as horrifying news. Thien is on a tour of V.F.W. posts across the country. He says the concern is widespread but the news isn’t all bad.

“So we’ve got some good people out there,” Thien said, “and we believe it should be a privilege to take care of veterans not a right.”

For folks like Duck McCambridge it just all hits a little too close to home.

“I think it is just outlandish and irresponsible to treat American veterans that way,” said McCambridge.

Most of these vets understand the V.A. is an organization trying to meet the needs of a growing population.

They also say though that meeting those needs should be a priority. Because vets go to war at a moment’s notice they should receive help that way too.
