Former state lawmaker Thomas Wright to leave prison

By Julian March

During Thomas Wright’s 15 years as a state legislator, his name was affixed to the member board mounted in the House chamber. Now, his name is scrawled on a board that keeps track of inmates at New Hanover County’s state prison.

Though he once walked among the most powerful politicians in the state, he has spent the past six years among convicts.

The Wilmington Democrat’s fall from grace was cemented in 2008, when he became the first sitting legislator to be expelled from the General Assembly since 1880.

After he was found guilty of fraud and obstruction of justice, he was sentenced to prison and removed from the voter rolls.

But soon, his name will be wiped clean from the list of inmates. Wright is scheduled to be released Monday – Memorial Day – ending the prison time for his four felony convictions.
