Wilmington students blog about European adventures

Teachers and students from Murray Middle and Ashley High School are on the trip of a lifetime. Thirty students and four teachers are halfway through their excursion to France. They’ve been keeping track of all the excitement through blogs.

One of the teachers wrote about the culture shock in a school cafeteria. “You should expect wine with both lunch and dinner. And not just one glass of wine either! Here, it is as common as water. So we teachers do not wish to offend, in America, that would be a cause for firing! Not so here!”

Teachers cut into their personal vacation time to take the trip. Over the phone, freshman Aryn O’Connor told WWAY about her visit to an old concentration camp in Strasbourg. “We went into the crematorium, and it had the stove and everything in it, it was very hard to go through and see that but they also had some of the torture things that they use, that was just horrible for a lot of us.”

It’s not all work. Ryan Grooms blogged about a new outfit he bought for his trip. “I got a fly new outfit that I’m going to wear tomorrow; expect a new Frenchy Ryan.”

He has a reason to dress up. Friday, students will get to shake hands with President Obama. He’s in Strasbourg this week for the G-20 Summit. The group and their host families have arranged a special meeting with him while he’s there.

The schools were not able to finance the trip, so teachers and students started the Cape Fear Global Club, and raised money on their own.

The excursion ends on Sunday, April 12th. We plan to catch up with the teachers and students, including Aryn, to tell us more about their discoveries when they return home.
