Memorial Day ceremonies

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — If you would like to participate in some of the community events scheduled to honor our fallen heroes today, here are some of the Memorial Day happenings.

New Hanover County:
11:00 a.m. The Wilmington National Cemetery Memorial Day service hosted by New Hanover County Veterans Council.
A “tolling of the bell” ceremony will read aloud the names of more than 500 local veterans who passed over the past year. Mayor Bill Saffo will bring greetings from the city, and Commissioner Beth Dawson from the county.

5:45 p.m. People of all generations from across the State will gather together on the deck of the Battleship to pay their respects. An emotional ceremony, preceding and concluding with military musical arrangements provided by a military band, and a guest speaker reflecting on the past as well as where we are today. The Executive Director of the Battleship, Captain Terry A. Bragg and members of the USS NORTH CAROLINA Battleship Commission invite the public to this free event. Governor Pat McCrory will also be in attendance.

Brunswick County:
9:30 a.m. Sunset Beach Memorial Day celebrations and flag pole dedication at the site of the future Veteran’s Memorial located at 303 Sunset Blvd North.

10:50 a.m. Congressman Mike McIntyre will deliver remarks at the Calabash Fire Department Memorial Day celebration and wreath laying ceremony located at 882 Persimmon Road.
