The Fork and Cork: from food truck to restaurant
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — What used to be one of Wilmington’s favorite food trucks has become the newest addition to downtown’s restaurant scene.
Owner James Smith says starting out as a food truck was the perfect stepping stone to opening a full restaurant.
“This was always the plan. I always wanted to put our food out there and get a response,” Smith says.
And what a response he got.
Regulars to Smith’s old food truck The Patty Wagon were more than ready for The Fork and Cork to open.
Loyal customer Jeffrey Simon says “He definitely created a loyal following that has been waiting for him to open this restaurant,” Simon said. “We’ve all been chomping at the bit.”
Smith sold his food truck in January after being at the forefront of downtown food truck regulation discussions last year.
In 2013 he was quoted saying, “In the very beginning it was the restaurant verses the food trucks and I think that with Tom and I coming together and talking we realized we were both really the same people.”
Looking back, Smith says, “It’s been a great run and I’m glad I was a part of the rules for the food trucks here and hopefully it works out for other people.”
