Ex-Charlotte mayor to plead in corruption case

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon is expected to plead guilty in federal court Tuesday on a public corruption charge related to his March arrest.

Documents filed Monday at US District Court in Charlotte say Cannon has agreed to enter a guilty plea to a single count of honest services wire fraud, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Cannon is set to appear in federal court Tuesday before US Magistrate Judge David Cayer.

Cannon was arrested March 26 and accused of accepting more than $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen who wanted to do work with North Carolina’s largest city. The Democrat resigned the same day, less than six months after taking office.
