NC college students lobby for in-state tuition for illegal immigrants

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Some college students participated in a mock graduation at the General Assembly, asking North Carolina lawmakers to extend in-state tuition rates to students who are not in the country legally.

Students from around the state shared what it’s like going through school while in the country without legal permission and the challenges they face in pursuing a career path because of their immigration status. A coalition of several Latino groups sponsored the event and is spending the day lobbying Republican lawmakers to give students in-state tuition rates.

Felicia Arriaga with Student Action with Farmworkers said the students enjoyed this graduation more than their actual one because it lets them identify with others who’ve shared their experiences and gives them a platform to share their stories.
