Wilmington man gets ready for ‘Great Race’ down east coast

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Antique cars lovers are gathering this weekend to race 2,100 miles along the east coast.

People from all over the United States are competing, but it’s not just the top cash prize that drives the participants.

The Great Race is for vintage, collector cars to rally from one location to another. Cars must be made before 1972 and include a team of a driver and navigator. This year, competitors will start in Maine Saturday and end in The Villages, FL, on June 29, with many stops in between, including the Port City.

Buddy Green of Wilmington has participated in the Great Race for three years now. He says the people he meets make the difference.

“We get to meet the same people year after year,” Green said. “This year there will be 40 new teams, which means there’s over 60 returning teams. These people become like friends and family.”

Last year, Green drove a 1957 Ford Fairlane in the race. This year, Green’s team will drive the famous General Lee from the “Dukes of Hazzard.”

If you want to check out some of the antique cars, competitors will make a pit stop in Wilmington June 26. They’ll be on Water Street downtown from about 5 until 7 p.m.
