Keeping Masonboro Island clean and safe this 4th of July

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Spending the 4th of July on Masonboro Island can be fun but folks with the NC Division of Coastal Management hope you leave it the way you found it.

“Masonboro is sort of a local treasure,” one Jessica Jacob says she visits often, “it’s nice, it’s pristine. It’s a place where all sorts of people can partake in all sorts of recreational activities, and enjoy themselves.”

She and others have seen it fill up too when holiday weekends roll around.

“There’s a ton of people,” Jacob said, “It’s a completely different scene than not fourth of July.”

“We’re all working together just to have a safe 4th of July this year,” said Lt. Matthew Payne with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office adding this year they’ll be out in full force, “4th of July weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year for me.”

At meeting about Masonboro today 4th of July was on the agenda and safety is a top priority.

Folks with the Masonboro Local Advisory Board said things to think about include, making sure people are following the law, and quick ways to get people that are hurt to help.

“If we can get them on our boat and transport them to Bradley Creek Marina,” said Payne, “They’re right near Oleander Dr., right near either hospital.”

The biggest issue though trash.

“It’s one that we’ve been struggling with for several years,” said Michele Walker with the NC Division of Coastal Management, “We want them to be safe and we want them to take care of themselves and others while they’re on the island.”

They also want you to take care of the island. Officials asking you to treat Masonboro like you have some common sense. If you go out have fun, safely, and leave it as nice as you found it.
