Crews contain flames after complex catches fire for second time this month
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters put out flames at a Wilmington apartment complex after the third fire there this year sparked early this morning.
Dispatchers say the call came in around 5:30 a.m., reporting visible smoke coming from a building in Colonial Grand Apartments off of St. Andrews Drive near Carolina Beach Road.
They say Wilmington Police, along with Wilmington Fire crews, responded to the scene, where dispatchers say a citizen in one of the buildings nearby spotted the smoke and flames from the fire.
Fire investigators are looking into what caused the flames there this time, after another left behind thousands in damage to a bottom-floor unit there less than two weeks ago. Before that, a fire in January destroyed at least two units there.
When WWAY talked to residents who live there after the June 8 fire, many said they felt uneasy after seeing so many fires there this often. Because of the frequent flames, witnesses at the scene there earlier this month even said the complex could soon see some residents moving out.
