WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This week’s Extraordinary Person of the Week is a two for one. A father-son combo I call the “Double Down Duo”!
In the fall of 2012, David Calhoun would enter a nationwide fitness challenge called the Max Formation Life Challenge.
In the fall of 2013, another David Calhoun would enter the same fitness challenge.
Now they’re calling each other in the mornings, talking a little trash, and losing a little weight.
Actually, a lot of weight. About 200 pounds between the two. Meet the double down duo…
“He asked me if I would enter,” said the dad.
“I just walked up to him, talked a little trash,” replied the son.
“I just think that these two guys are an inspiration,” added the owner of the store who represented the two.
The story starts with David Calhoun…the younger version.
David, Sr said of his son, “He won the challenge and when he flew back from California, he asked me if I would enter.”
And the story continues with David Calhoun….the father.
David(son) described his message to dad, “Come on, when are you going to do this? And the second I did that he was like, alright, I’m going do it.”
This father-son duo is a tale of losing weight and gaining a bond.
David Sr: “I couldn’t think of a better way to support him then to enter the contest, the more I entered, the longer I got into it, the healthier I got. The stronger I felt. I really enjoy working out with my son.”
Just two years ago David(son) weighed more than 300 pounds.
He entered the 2013 Max Formation Life Challenge, a nationwide fitness challenge.
He won…by losing. Losing more than 100 pounds.
Max Muscle franchisee/fitness guru Artie Quaranta described the celebration after David(son) got back from the nationals. “We had a reception,” Artie said. “David(son) won the contest last year. We had a reception, and his father was standing right here and said “you saved my son’s life and everyone was tearing up and then David turned around and said, now what are you gonna do dad? and I said oh boy”
Oh boy. The father battling weight issues of his own and following his son’s lead and now competing in the 2014 Max Form Life Challenge.
Artie Quaranta added, “You have someone who’s overcome childhood obesity, you have a father, who has a career, and a family, and has been able to do it despite all that.”
So far, David(dad) has lost nearly 80 pounds.
David, Sr, “I started walking on the treadmill, doing 5 pushups.”
David(son) “We both love the fact that we can wake up at six in the morning and call each other and say, hey, I’ve already hit the gym, what are you doing right now?”
Right now? In my eyes, right now this father and son are being….Extraordinary.
The 2014 fitness challenge that David(Sr) is competing in wraps up at the end of the month.
