Clean up crew tries to get Laney a passing grade

Body

The laundry list of things to clean at Laney High School is long. When it comes to cleanliness, the New Hanover County Health Department basically gave Laney a “C”.

After four internal inspections from the school’s maintenance department, and one by the health department, Laney got a score of 70.5 citing sanitation problems in the bathroom, floors and walls that needed cleaning, and even finding roaches.

Now, 40 custodians from all over the county are helping to tidy up. Laney’s usual custodian staff of 12 has recently dropped to only nine who are responsible for cleaning ten buildings with 90 classrooms.

With the current budget crunch and a hiring freeze, less people are having to clean more.

“If you are in a situation where you don’t have the number of custodians to do a thorough job on a regular basis, things tend to build up,” said Gene Rivenbark, Laney’s assistant principal.

In current budget proposals, school officials may have to cut back on custodian positions in the upcoming year, but for now, cleaning up the mess is most important.

Many of the problems found were repeat violations. “We had an issue at Laney. We needed to address it, and spring break gave us the opportunity to do that,” said NHC Superintendent of Operations Bill Hance.

The NHC Health Department is in the process of inspecting 62 public and private schools in the county. So far, Laney has the lowest score.
