WPD: Attempted armed robbery reported while officers still on scene nearby

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are investigating after they say the second of two robberies was reported while officers were still on the scene of the first crime less than a block away.

Wilmington Police say the first call came in around 12:15 a.m., reporting an armed robbery in the 300 block of Darlington Avenue. Officers say the two victims told them they were walking home when two men approached them, one of which pulled out a handgun and pointed it at them. Officers say the robbers demanded that the female victim hand over her purse. When she did, police say the suspects then told them to walk away and not look back.

Then shortly after midnight, as officers were still searching the area there, another call came in reporting an attempted robbery just a block away in the 200 block of Darlington Ave. That’s where police say two men who had already spoken with police about the previous robbery just an hour before were also approached by a robber.

Police say the two victims were walking near Courts & Sports Bar & Grill when a man walked up to them, asking for a cigarette. When the suspect pulled out a handgun, officers say one of the two victims asked him if he was crazy with cops still right up the street. Police say the would-be robber then took off running, and the two victims ran to their apartment complex to make contact with the officers still on the scene of the first robbery.
