STORMTRACK 3: Weak disturbance off Florida coast monitored

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A persistent area of thunderstorms off the Florida coast is being monitored closely for development. As of Monday morning, no tropical depressions have officially been identified. So far, a combination of wind shear and dry air have kept the system very weak. However, proximity to the Gulf Stream waters could allow the system to become a tropical depression or tropical storm by mid-week. A Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system later this afternoon. The data obtained during the flight will offer further insight for forecasters.

The system will remain near Florida through mid-week, but an approaching cold front will turn the system to the northeast by the weekend- and eventually out to sea. The big question is how close to the North Carolina coast will the system track as it pulls away from the United States. Some models have the system brushing the coast on Friday. Other models keep most of the active weather offshore.

For now, expect typical July weather through Wednesday- with plenty of sunshine, heat, and a slight chance of thunderstorms. By late Thursday and Friday, an approaching cold front will increase the chance of thunderstorms.
