Third case of mosquito-borne virus reported in NC

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — A third case of a mosquito-borne virus that can sicken victims for weeks has been confirmed in North Carolina.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Monday that a Buncombe County resident has contracted chikungunya. It’s believed the victim was bitten by an infected mosquito while traveling with a group in Haiti.

Cases also were reported in Alamance and Forsyth counties. Both victims also were thought to have contracted the virus while overseas.

Chikungunya symptoms include fever, joint pain and swelling, headache, muscle pain and rash. Most people recover within a week, but health officials said some victims suffer joint pain for months. Symptoms usually appear three to seven days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito. It cannot be spread from person to person.
