Bond increased for child molestation suspect
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man accused of sex crimes involving a 10-year old girl made his first appearance in a New Hanover County courtroom today.
Nathaniel Malpass is charged with multiple crimes, including three counts of first degree sexual offense on a child.
Wilmington Police arrested Malpass Friday. He appeared in court today via video from jail.
His attorney said initially he planned to ask for a bond reduction, but a judge actually tripled the bond for Malpass from $100,000 to $300,000.
Malpass’s attorney also signaled his intention to contest the validity of the charges. The defendant’s family was in the courtroom today on his behalf.
The victim’s mother in this case talked to us exclusively over the weekend. She said she never thought she’d have to deal with.
“No. I would never, and never with him,” the woman, who we are not identifying to protect the identity of the victim. “I mean, we trusted him. He was a part of our family.”
Malpass’s sister would not speak with us after the hearing today, but on our Facebook page wrote, “This is my brother… Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty??”
His attorney agreed to speak with us, and then walked away from the courthouse telling us he’d be right back, but he never returned.
The attorney had told us Malpass could not afford to post bond. Malpass remains in jail tonight. His next court date is July 17.
If found guilty, Malpass could face as much as three life sentences without parole.
