FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Accused child molester released on bond
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An man accused of sex crimes involving a 10-year-old girl is out of jail under a $300,000 bond.
Nathaniel Malpass made his first appearance in a New Hanover County courtroom Monday. He is charged with multiple crimes, including three counts of first degree sexual offense on a child.
Wilmington Police arrested Malpass Friday. He appeared in court Monday via video from jail.
His attorney said, initially he planned to ask for a bond reduction. But, a judge actually tripled the bond for Malpass from $100,000 to $300,000.
Malpass’s attorney also signaled his intention to contest the validity of the charges. The defendant’s family was in the courtroom Monday on his behalf.
The victim’s mother in this case talked to us exclusively over the weekend. She said she never thought she’d have to deal with.
“No. I would never, and never with him,” said the woman, who we are not identifying to protect the identity of the victim. “I mean, we trusted him. He was a part of our family.”
Malpass’ sister would not speak with us after the hearing. But, on our Facebook page wrote, “This is my brother … Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?”
His attorney agreed to speak with us, and then walked away from the courthouse telling us he’d be right back, but he never returned.
The next court date for Malpass is July 17.
If found guilty, Malpass could face as much as three life sentences without parole.
