STORMTRACK 3: First Tropical Depression of season tracks toward NC

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tropical Depression ONE is positioned off the East Coast of Florida this morning and has yet to make its reverse turn to the north, but models are in good agreement with the track and intensity of this system.

At this point, Tropical Depression ONE should strengthen to the first tropical storm of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season by this afternoon. An approaching cold front will guide the soon-to-be Tropical Storm Arthur to the northeast by the middle of the week. It arrives very close to our shores on Thursday. The storm may then strengthen to a Category 1 Hurricane as it brushes the Outer Banks on Friday.

So what does that mean for us? Showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage Thursday and part of Friday around here. The system will depart the Carolinas late Friday, allowing a typical summertime pattern to resume for most of the weekend.

Even though this system is not expected to make landfall, the National Hurricane Center still forecasts tropical storm winds in our area.
