Couple charged with drugs, child abuse after three-month investigation

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says a three-month heroin investigation by its Vice/Narcotics Unit ended with two people in jail on drug and child abuse charges.

The investigation stemmed from several citizen complaints about Freddie Taylor III selling large amounts of heroin from his home at 1812 Orange St. while his girlfriend, Michelle Gilliam, and three juveniles were present. Detectives say they bought heroin from Taylor at the home while Gilliam and the three kids were there.

During the execution of a search warrant, detectives found about 267 individual wax bags of heroin, syringes and numerous prescription medications along with a small amount of marijuana on the kitchen table. There were two small children in the home when detectives arrived.

A Department of Social Services representative came to the home and opened an investigation into the matter involving the children.

Both Gilliam and Taylor are charged with trafficking heroin, possession with intent to sell/deliver heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and two counts of child abuse. Taylor is in jail under $250,000 secured bond, while Gilliam received a $100,000 secured bond.

Taylor’s criminal record includes a long list of drug convictions dating back to 1998, according to the NC Department of Corrections website. Gilliam’s record includes convictions for larceny and worthless check.
